Read More About Me

My name is Yama Bundu, RN, BSN, MSN, AGPCNP, PMH-NP-BC, and I am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with a strong interdisciplinary background in adult-gerontology, post-acute nursing, leadership, and advanced psychiatric care. I have more than 15 years of progressive clinical and administrative experience. I have dedicated my career to improving the quality, accessibility, and outcomes of mental health and medical services across diverse populations. I am pursuing my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at Walden University. My academic and clinical interests focus on strengthening mental health screening practices, enhancing suicide prevention strategies, optimizing psychopharmacology, and expanding evidence-based psychiatric care within complex healthcare systems.

My nursing journey started in 2007 when I earned my Home Health Aide certification in New York. Shortly after, I advanced to become a Certified Nursing Assistant in Virginia in 2008, which served as the foundation for my passion for direct care and clinical

excellence. I progressed in the nursing profession, becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse in 2011. Later, I completed the Associate of Applied Science and Registered Nurse programs at Northern Virginia Community College between 2012 and 2016. These early years shaped my dedication to patient-centered care, particularly for vulnerable and underserved populations.

In 2020, I completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Colorado Technical University. Wanting to grow further in advanced practice, I enrolled at Walden University and completed my first master’s degree as an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP) in 2023. Besides the BSN, I also completed a Master’s degree specializing in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) at Walden University. I was certified by the board as a PMHNP. These dual NP degrees allowed me to integrate medical and psychiatric knowledge, enabling me to provide holistic care to patients with complex health needs across the lifespan.

Throughout my professional career, I have held a broad range of leadership and clinical roles. My tenure at CommuniCare Health

Care Center from 2017 to 2025 was instrumental in shaping my leadership expertise. I served as Assistant RDCO, Mobile Director of Nursing, Infection Preventionist, Wound Nurse, Unit Manager, Nurse Educator, and RN House Supervisor. These multifaceted roles allowed me to oversee clinical operations in multiple buildings, manage more than 120 clinical staff, and prepare facilities for state surveys. I developed and implemented policies, elevated quality improvement initiatives, led interdisciplinary team collaboration, and provided crisis leadership during organizational and patient emergencies. My work in post-acute care strengthened my ability to manage psychiatric conditions in medically fragile patients. I collaborated closely with interdisciplinary teams through Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) committee meetings to ensure appropriate psychotropic use, accurate DSM-5 diagnostic assessments, and safe medication practices. I educated staff and families on mental health conditions to help reduce stigma, promote early identification of psychiatric symptoms, and strengthen safety measures around suicide prevention. I also performed capacity assessments, guided gradual
